1 minute with....Dan Rackham

Dan Rackham will be one of our speakers for this year's Premier Digital Conference, in 60 seconds he tells us why he's passionate about digital, why his dad is his hero and what we can expect from his session.

Tell us an interesting fact about you

I've been making YouTube videos for 3 years and in that time my videos have been watched over 3 million times. Or if you don't want a digital fact then feel free to use: I love extreme sports - basically anything that involves riding a board whether it's kitesurfing, skateboarding or snowboarding - they are 3 of my favourites.

Why are you passionate about digital?

Because of the scope of using digital content to get people talking about Jesus. I used to be a community worker in Liverpool. I began wondering if there was a way to reach out to folk in the community through video. So I tried going to local events, filming & visually documenting them, interviewing those involved, etc, and trying to do all that in fun way. That's when I started my Youtube channel and created a weekly video for over a year. Some of these videos would be picked up by local press and media, and so I ended up being offered press passes to events, etc. All this was great for getting to know people in the Liverpool community. I also tried to have roughly every fourth video as a bit of a window into the Christian faith, perhaps showcasing an event at church, or something of my own testimony, or a theme I’d been reflecting on. I've found that video is a great way of giving people a window into your life. And I've found that people have started asking questions and thinking about who Jesus is as a result of seeing some of my videos. Being able to create some content that shares the gospel and get it out to anybody who would like to watch it is amazing. These days I work full-time on the ministry website it's a growing collection of engaging videos from a number of different Christian YouTube creators. The videos on it are available to download free for churches and organisations to show offline at services and events.

Name a hero of yours and why

My biggest hero is my Dad. Why? Because of his tenaciousness and generosity. He's able to apply himself to something, stick at it, work hard and overcome obstacles that just seem too big. He's not a professional builder by trade but he's always wanted to build his own house and he's now done that! Doing the foundations, brickwork, roofing, tiling  and the work on the interior himself. Now he's on to building his second house. Even though he's really busy working on the house he's still generous with his time helping out at church or the family.

What can people expect from your session?

Myself and Glen Scrivener will be putting our heads together to share things we've learnt as we've created short bitesize videos aimed at getting people talking about Jesus. We'll be discussing the importance of starting with God's story as the foundation for videos that communicate the gospel. We'll share our process for how we've gone from ideas to scripts to filming. We'll have a time for questions and looking through some examples of helpful videos out there and how they've managed to communicate the gospel effectively. We'll also share some helpful ideas for how to get your videos seen by people.

What most excites you about #PremDAC17 (other than your own session!)?

I went last year. Loved it. Very useful. The thing I'm looking forward to most this year is chatting with and bouncing ideas of the many likeminded people that will be there.
