5 minutes with...The Mustard Seed

Creator of The Mustard Seed blog and winner of Young Blogger of the Year, Ruth Clemence shares how her blog was birthed out of a challenging time in her life and why it's important to be patient (when developing an idea).

What inspired you to create The Mustard Seed?

The Mustard Seed was originally called ‘Ruthie’s Journey’ and I started writing it in May 2011 when I was halfway through cancer treatment. My aim was to share my experience, but to show others how my faith in God was making a difference in those moments of suffering. Today I still want to share my Christian faith with others through everyday life. I am still on a journey but The Mustard Seed reminds me that at times in my life when my faith feels as small as a mustard seed, I still have a great God who is with me.

What was your first reaction when you heard you won the Young Blogger of the Year?

A mixture of emotions! I was really happy to have won, but I felt really emotional. I have been blogging for five years and looking back to where I was when I first started as a poorly 19 year old, it had all led to this moment. I wanted to give thanks to God for being with me each day and in the words from the hymn ‘Amazing Grace’, it was ‘his grace that brought me safe thus far’.

What does winning this award mean to you?

It encourages me as a writer and a blogger to keep going. Writing is what I love to do and it’s my passion. To have that recognised is wonderful.

How has winning the category impacted your work?

It has been great to have the recognition and support from so many people upon winning the award. Some have been following my blog for years, whilst others are finding out more about my writing because of winning Young Blogger of the Year.

What are your plans for The Mustard Seed in 2017?

I am hoping to have guest writers feature on my blog and would like to start podcasting in the New Year. Writing blog posts will continue to be the focus, but I am really excited about trying different ways of communicating through my website and reaching as many people as possible with the good news of Jesus.

How important is the Premier Digital Conference in today’s modern Christian community?

The Premier Digital Conference is a great place to learn, engage and start to think practically about how we can use the digital effectively. At the Premier Digital Conference you can find a variety of different seminars that interest you, whether you are a beginner or well informed with the online world. As Christians, I think it is important to be a part of the online community because there is so much discussion and interaction happening in the digital sphere. We can be a voice in that space too.

What advice would you give to Christians with a digital project or idea that they want to launch?

Go for it! I think it’s important to have a vision and to have an aim of what you are hoping to achieve and why. It keeps you focused and grounded, especially on the days when you question why you do it – there will be highs and lows. People will often want to know the ‘what’ and ‘why’ behind what you do too, so it’s always good to know this yourself. Of course it may change over time; my blog is no longer about going through cancer, however I still want to share my faith in everyday life with others.

I would also say it takes time to deliver the vision, so be patient! It took me five years to get to this point and my website has changed a lot, along with my writing style (look through my blog archive to see what I mean!).

How can people get in touch with you?

It would be great to hear from you and you can get in touch with me by contacting me on my website ruthclemence.com, Twitter @ruth_the_writer or Facebook.
