A family that prays together stays together isn’t that how the old adage goes? How true this is, prayer is a bonding agent like no other, it is a glue that builds families up and holds them together.
We know this but let’s be honest how many of us really make prayer a priority in our daily family lives? We want to pray, we intend to pray but somehow the busyness of life just gets in the way.
Not only this, but perhaps the rest of your family don’t feel as passionate as we do about praying together, or even praying for each other on a regular basis. Your family is happy, well adjusted, fairly normal in the grand scheme of things, you all have your own personal prayer life with God, why pray more? And yet the burden for family prayer rests and remains on your heart. If you can relate I have five sessions that I would like to share with you.
5 things that you can start doing today to improve your family’s prayer life
Share your desire with God in prayer
If you want prayer to be a priority in your family, pray about it.
2. Turn your family conversations into prayer points
As you talk to your family members make a mental note of the things that are on their heart and the things they need support with and add them to your prayer list.
3. Share your answered prayers
Keep track of your prayers and when God answers them let your family know as a reminder to them that God still hears and answers prayers.
4. Take the lead
Set a time each day or week to pray for your family it may be just 5 mins every morning to start with, stick with it until it becomes a habit.
5. Invite your family to join you
Let your family know of your new prayer commitment, invite them to join in prayer, by praying with you or simply at the same time in their own space.
Can I give you some good news?
There is a free tool available to you that makes these five things super easy, the Praying.Works app. Technology doesn’t have to be a prayer hindrance it can be a prayer tool. Praying.Works could be your family prayer platform. You can use it to:
- Create a prayer diary: Make a note of the things you are praying for, and desire to share with God
Use Praying.Works to keep a diary of the things you’re praying for. Philippians 4:6 reminds us not to be anxious about anything; but to pray about everything. Instead of worrying or trying to fix things in your own strength, commit them to your prayer diary so you never forget to commit them to God in prayer.
- Create a live prayer stream
The Live Prayer Stream feature allows you to pray for each other as life happens. Also follow the live stream to prayer for others as needs arise.
- Share your answered prayer: Encourage others with the goodness of God
Use the app to share your answered prayers as an encouragement to your family.
- Gentle Reminders: Make prayer a habit
Attach reminders to your prayer requests and get a notification via email at the times you want to pray.
- Create a family prayer group
Think of it as a WhatsApp group but focused on your family’s prayer needs. These are just a few suggestions to help you boost your family’s prayer life. Wouldn’t it be great if the next time your phone buzzed it wasn’t a Facebook notification but a prayer reminder or a request from your spouse or child to pray with or for them?
